Description
Flat bar in natural nylon PA6, already cut to width and length: machine it directly into guides, slide pads and flat parts. It is the most widely used engineering plastic for working mechanical parts: it combines mechanical strength, toughness and wear resistance at a reasonable price. It is extruded PA6, in its natural milky-white colour.
- Thicknessesfrom 6 to 40 mm
- Widthsfrom 20 to 150 mm
- Lengths1000 mm / 2000 mm
- Operating temperature*-40 / +100 °C (peaks up to +160 °C)
- Density*1.15 g/cm³
The material
PA6 withstands impacts and repeated loads well, slides reasonably on steel and is easy to turn and mill, including threads and deep holes. The limit to always keep in mind is moisture: it absorbs 2-3 % and swells as it does so, so a part machined to tight tolerances can change size in a damp environment.
Typical applications
Operating conditions
| Service temperature* | -40 / +100 °C continuous (peaks up to +160 °C) |
|---|---|
| Resists | Oils, greases, fuels, aliphatic hydrocarbons, dilute alkalis. Excellent wear and impact resistance |
| Avoid | Strong acids, oxidisers, prolonged exposure to hot water, environments where moisture-related dimensional changes cannot be tolerated |
| Water absorption* | 2-3 % moisture at saturation in air |
| Hardness* | 80 Shore D / 160 MPa (ball indentation hardness) |
| Tensile strength* | ≥ 80 MPa (tensile strength) |
| Density* | 1.15 g/cm³ |
Advantages
- Excellent ratio of mechanical strength to price
- Wear and impact resistance above the average for engineering plastics
- Easy to machine
- Easy to find in rods and flat bars of many sizes
Limitations
- Absorbs moisture (2-3 %), with resulting dimensional changes
- Not suitable for strong acids
- Tight tolerances must be checked under actual operating conditions
Available sizes
Thicknesses from 6 to 40 mm, widths from 20 to 150 mm, lengths 1000 mm or 2000 mm: choose the combination from the menus above and the price updates automatically.
Technician's tipChoose PA6 when you need mechanical strength and wear resistance at a reasonable cost, and the environment is dry or tolerances are not critical. If the part must stay accurate in a damp environment, POM-C is the better choice.
