Description
Solid rod in white PTFE (Teflon), to be turned or milled into the finished part. It is the material with the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid and the broadest chemical resistance of all: very few substances attack it and it works from -200 to +260 °C.
- Diametersfrom 20 to 100 mm
- Bars500 mm / 1000 mm
- Operating temperature*-200 / +260 °C
- Density*2.20 g/cm³
The material
PTFE is non-stick, non-wettable and an excellent insulator; it can be machined but is soft, so tight tolerances require care. It is chosen for chemistry and temperature, not for mechanical strength: under constant load it "cold-flows".
Oversize diameters: the actual diameter of the rods is slightly larger than the nominal one, leaving material for turning to size.
Typical applications
Operating conditions
| Service temperature* | -200 / +260 °C continuous |
|---|---|
| Resists | Practically all chemicals, including concentrated acids and alkalis, solvents and oxidisers |
| Avoid | High static loads (it cold-flows), structural applications, gluing without surface treatment |
| Water absorption* | < 0.01 % — nil for practical purposes |
| Hardness* | 55-60 Shore D |
| Tensile strength* | 20-30 MPa |
| Density* | 2.20 g/cm³ |
| Food contact | Yes, listed by the shop for food use |
Advantages
- The lowest coefficient of friction of all
- Inert to almost all chemicals
- Very wide temperature range, from -200 to +260 °C
- Non-stick, non-wettable
Limitations
- Cold-flows under constant load (creep)
- Mechanically soft, not suitable for structural functions
- Cannot be glued without surface treatment
- High cost compared with other engineering plastics
Available sizes
Diameters from 20 to 100 mm (9 sizes), in 500 mm or 1000 mm bars.
Technician's tipIt is chosen for chemistry and temperature, never for mechanical strength. If the part must carry a constant load, you need grades filled with glass, carbon or bronze.
